D♭ major scale

The D♭ major scale (D flat major) is D♭ E♭ F G♭ A♭ B♭ C D♭: five flats (B♭, E♭, A♭, D♭ and G♭). Here it is for both hands with the standard fingering, one or two octaves, to listen to and play along with.

  • 5 flats: B♭ E♭ A♭ D♭ G♭
  • Relative minor: B♭ minor
  • RH 2 3 1 2 3 4 1 2
  • LH 3 2 1 4 3 2 1 3
Eighth notes, ♩ = 72 D♭ major scale One octave

Listen with the cursor following the notes, or play along: the music waits for each note, and the keys show which finger to use.

The notes

D♭ major has five flats. It sounds the same as C♯ major (seven sharps), which is why almost all music in this key is written in flats.

Key signature

D♭ major has five flats (B♭, E♭, A♭, D♭ and G♭). They are written at the start of every line, in that order, and apply to every octave: every B, E, A, D and G in the music is played flat unless an accidental says otherwise.

Fingering

Right hand: 2 3 1 2 3 4 1 2 going up. Going up, the thumb passes under the third finger from E♭ to F and the thumb passes under the fourth finger from B♭ to C. The fourth finger plays B♭: once per octave, a good landmark for where the hand is.

Left hand: 3 2 1 4 3 2 1 3 going up. Going up, the fourth finger crosses over the thumb from F to G♭ and the third finger crosses over the thumb from C to D♭. The fourth finger plays G♭: once per octave, a good landmark for where the hand is.

The thumbs play only F and C, the white keys. The right hand plays D♭, E♭ with 2 3 and G♭, A♭, B♭ with 2 3 4; the left hand starts on its third finger and crosses its fourth finger over onto G♭.

Chords in D♭ major

The triads built on each note of the scale. I, IV and V, the three major chords, are the chords most songs in this key are built on.

Music in D♭ major

  • Debussy’s “Clair de lune”
  • Chopin’s “Raindrop” Prelude, Op. 28 No. 15
  • Chopin’s “Minute” Waltz, Op. 64 No. 1

How to practise it

  • Hands separately first, slowly, saying the finger numbers. Fingering learned slowly stays; fingering found at speed changes every time.
  • Practise the thumb crossings alone: play just the notes either side of each crossing, back and forth, until the thumb is in place before it’s needed.
  • Then hands together, one octave, then two. The hands cross their thumbs at different places, which is what makes scales hands together hard at first.
  • Use “Play along” above: it waits for each note, so you can check every note and finger at your own pace. Then Listen at ♩ = 72 and play with it.
  • Say the sharps or flats before you start: B♭, E♭, A♭, D♭ and G♭. Knowing them makes the scale much easier to read in pieces.
